XXI Edition of the Chinese University Bridge / Dragon Boat
Main goal
In order to promote the teaching of the Mandarin language and awaken interest in Chinese culture among the student population of the Confucius Institute of the University of Costa Rica (IC-UCR) and students nationwide; The IC-UCR and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Costa Rica call for the celebration of the XXI Chinese Bridge World Contest in its categories: University Chinese Bridge and Dragon Boat. Each participant must read the requirements of each category and may only participate in one.
1. Categories
I.1 University Chinese Bridge Category:
I. Participation requirements:
- Students from a university recognized by the National Council of Private University Higher Education (CONESUP), attached to the Ministry of Public Education, in charge of regulating and supervising Private Universities, and the National Council of Rectors ( CONARE) that regulates aspects of coordination for the joint exercise of public university autonomy in various fields.
- Be between 18 and 30 years old during the present 2022.
- Have Costa Rican nationality.
- Not having Mandarin as a mother tongue.
II. Form and content of the contest: the participant must send two videos, one for each part of the contest. The technical specifications of the video will be detailed later:
- Speech (2 minutes): For this part you have to prepare a speech in Chinese with the theme: “One world, one family”. The jury will assess the pronunciation, intonation, fluency of each applicant, as well as the content and quality of the speech.
- Presentation of Chinese cultural art (3 minutes): For this part you must make a video in which you clearly explain how you will make a presentation that shows Chinese culture, in this video you ONLY MUST CLEARLY EXPLAIN WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO PERFORM as a cultural presentation. The jury will evaluate the chosen theme, the difficulty and how you plan to execute your performance. Please note that the final contest will be face-to-face and the presentation cannot exceed 3 minutes. Important: the jury will evaluate both videos as a single entry to qualify for the final, therefore, the jury will focus mainly on the potential and clarity of your application.
1.2 Dragon Boat Category:
I. Participation requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Not having Chinese nationality.
- Not having Mandarin as a mother tongue.
- Live in Costa Rica during the contest process (applies to both Costa Rican participants and those of other nationalities).
II. Form and content of the contest: The participant must choose only one of the following dynamics to participate and send a video. The technical specifications of the video will be detailed later:
- Speech (maximum 2 minutes): For this dynamic you must prepare a speech in Chinese with the theme: “Who am I?” The jury will assess the candidate's pronunciation, intonation, fluency, as well as the content and quality of the speech. In this dynamic, the jury will not take into account video editing tools, only the performance of the participant in the aforementioned aspects.
- Presentation of Chinese cultural arts (maximum 3 minutes): For this part you must make a video in which you clearly explain how you will make a presentation that shows Chinese culture, that is, in this video you ONLY MUST EXPLAIN CLEARLY WHAT WILL YOU PERFORM as a cultural presentation. The jury will evaluate the chosen theme, the difficulty and how you plan to execute your performance. Keep in mind the final will be virtual, therefore, although in this first video the jury will focus on the potential and clarity of your application; For the final, your presentation should not exceed 3 minutes and video editing tools will be taken into account as long as they are based on the aforementioned items. 2. Registration for the contest

- SEND ATTACHMENT: Send to cultura.confucio@ucr.ac.cr
- Chinese bridge: scanned ID and enrollment report from your university.
- Dragon boat: scanned ID.
- REGISTRATION PERIOD: From Monday March 28 to Monday April 18
- PRE-SELECTION CELEBRATION: The jury will evaluate the videos received on April 19
3. About the finalists and winners
- At the end of the pre-selection, the IC-UCR will recommend people to participate in the local final to be held as follows: Dragon Boat Category, Thursday June 9 through the IC-UCR FB; and University Chinese Bridge Category, Friday June 10 in person. For both dates and modalities, you will be promptly informed of the details relevant to each one.
- The winner of the first place in the Chinese University Bridge category will participate in the “Chinese Bridge 2022” International Contest, which will take place in China in virtual or face-to-face format, and is organized by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) and It will take place in the month of October (date and modality to be confirmed). Likewise, the winner will be informed by the CLEC in due course of the additional prizes for winning the local or international final.
- The winners of the first place in the Chinese University Bridge and Dragon Boat category, speech and cultural activity, respectively, will have a 100% scholarship to continue the Mandarin courses at the IC-UCR until all levels are finished, that is, say AV5. The courses must be enrolled continuously to keep the scholarship awarded.
- The winners of the second place in the Chinese University Bridge and Dragon Boat category, speech and cultural activity, respectively, will have a 100% scholarship to apply in the following IC-UCR Mandarin enrollment.
- For the remaining places in each category, a 50% scholarship will be awarded to apply for the next IC-UCR Mandarin enrollment.
- For this Chinese Bridge 2022 there will also be a winner chosen by the number of votes on social networks, who will receive a prize courtesy of Costa Rica Nihao! IC-UCR registered trademark. Those who qualify for the final will be informed in advance of the guidelines for this vote.
- The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Costa Rica and the IC-UCR will offer surprise prizes to the contestants who qualify for the final.
4. Technical specifications of the videos
Regardless of the category of participation, each video submitted must have the following characteristics:
- At the beginning of the video you must say in Spanish your full name, the video you are sending and the category of participation. For example: Kattia Barrientos, cultural activity, Dragon Boat category.
- The videos must be recorded horizontally.
- The video can be in mobile video ( taken directly from your cell phone), mp4, wmv or avi format.
